The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo represents a specialized municipality situated in the north-eastern Alberta. Wood Buffalo was formed as a result of the merger of Improvement District No. 143 and the City of Fort McMurray back in 1995. Today Wood Buffalo ranks the largest in the country by area, occupying almost 64,000 sq. km. Within this huge area there are broad oil sand deposits called the Athabasca Oil Sands, responsible for making the area one of the rapidly growing industrial regions throughout the country. Prior to the Alberta electoral boundary re-distribution, the area was shared between the Fort McMurray, representing the community, and the surrounding region of Athabasca-Wabasca.

Later, the re-distribution united the municipality into a single district, making it the most populated of its kind in Alberta. Public Transit System offers the residents efficient bus transportation service on a fixed basis – on its 8 regular daily routes, Transit System carries 900,000 people per year, connecting all of Fort McMurray’s subdivisions via direct or feeder connections. As for the air travel, the Fort McMurray Regional Airport provides all-weather services, managing more than 4,200 flights carrying about 200,000 passengers every year. Air Canada Jazz, Corporate Express, Air Mikisew, McMurray Aviation, and West Jet Airlines represent daily flights and charter carriers at the airport. Besides, the Fort McMurray Regional Airport offers air space for Wood Buffalo Helicopters, Highland Helicopters, Phoenix Heli-Flight, Canadian Helicopters, Delta Helicopters, as well as local search and rescue.
